By Andrew Walker, MPH; NSGA Director of Health & Well-Being
The 2023 National Senior Games presented by Humana was recently named a Champion of Economic Impact in Sports Tourism for creating outstanding economic impact in Pittsburgh and Alleghany County this past summer. We share this award with our incredible participants and partners who fueled The Games’ success and left a lasting impression on our host community.
One of those incredible partners is Humana. Since 2007, Humana has been synonymous with the National Senior Games as our presenting sponsor. Their support powers this age-positive event that builds community, celebrates health and inspires possibilities among participants, volunteers and attendees. Together, we create opportunities for older adults to experience the thrill of sports, competition, teamwork and perseverance in a place where they are not just tolerated, but honored.
Shared Values, Shared Results
Like Humana, NSGA values diversity, inclusion, equity and belonging, creating a safe space for older adults to play and compete in sports. In a recent Impact Report, Humana explains that they embrace health equity as a business and culture driver with goals of creating a system that is just and dignified. Through their volunteerism, monetary investments and strategic collaboration, Humana generates a multiplier effect impacting local communities.
In his book, “Shared Values and Shared Results, Positive Organizational Health as a Win-Win Philosophy,” Dee Edington, PhD., proposes that it is critical for organizations involved in health promotion to define mutually shared values and shared results among all stakeholders.
The NSGA is committed to partnering with aligned organizations like Humana to reduce health disparities, advance health equity and positively impact the well-being of athletes in the National Senior Games. When we work together toward the same goals, we accomplish more than we ever could alone.
Note: To learn how Humana advances health equity, addresses needs in communities and drives sustainable change, see more in their 2022 report.
