5K, 10K and 1 Mile

5K: 7:30 a.m.

1-Mile: 6:30 p.m.

10K: 8 a.m.

  1. In the1 Mile, 5K and 10K, all age divisions will run simultaneously.
  2. The 1 Mile Run will be conducted on a 1 mile road course.
  3. Awards will be presented for 1st through 8th place for each event within each age division.

Qualifying Rules

  1. All athletes who compete in a 5K/10K Road Race at a NSGA Qualifying State Games will qualify for the 2025 National Senior Games, or athletes can qualify by meeting the “limited” qualifying criteria in Rule D.
  2. For 2025, the 1 Mile Run event will be classified as an “OPEN” event.  Athletes do not need to qualify at a 2024 state qualifier.

Entry Regulations

  1. Athletes qualified in either the 5K or 10K road race may compete in both events.
  2. Individuals who want to qualify in the 5K and 10K Road Race must run the events separately. You cannot use your 5K split time from a 10K race to qualify for the 5K.
  3. A 5000 meter and 10000-meter track event cannot be used as a qualifying event for the 5K and 10K road race, respectively.

Venue Spotlights

10K Road Race
Principal Park
The 10K Road Race will take place in downtown Des Moines. The course will start and finish at Principal Park, home of the Iowa Cubs, with a spectacular backdrop of the Des Moines skyline and the confluence of the Des Moines River and Raccoon River. Stadium restrooms and portable toilets will be available, and there will be plenty of free parking on the stadium grounds. Race details and the course route are forthcoming.

5K Road Race
Iowa State Fairgrounds
The 5k Road Race will take place within the Iowa State Fairgrounds, where athletes will get a sneak peek of the Iowa State Fair just weeks before the opening day. The course will showcase the iconic landmarks within the grounds, such as the Sky Glider, Iowa-themed murals, livestock barns, Grand Ave concourse, Giant Slide and more. The course will take athletes through the ins and outs of the grounds, giving them a complete Iowa State Fairgrounds experience. The course will be on all paved surfaces (concrete and asphalt) with water and bathrooms nearby. Race details and the course route are forthcoming.

1-Mile Road Race
Iowa State Capitol Grounds
The 1-Mile Road Race is debuting in the 2025 National Senior Games as the Mile for the Ages community event. The run/walk will include a division for National Senior Games athletes and a community division open to all ages and abilities. The race will start and finish at the Iowa State Capitol and will precede the Flame Arrival Ceremony, also taking place on the Capitol grounds. This premiere intergenerational event will bring together National Senior Games athletes, friends, and family, and Des Moines community members. Race details and the course route are forthcoming.
