2015 Registration Open for More States

The state-by-state online registration process for the 2015 National Senior Games presented by Humana continues with email notifications and postcards sent out to qualified athletes in 30 states as of this newsletter. See the list of states now open here.  States are added as results submitted to NSGA are verified and loaded into our registration system. If you qualified in more than one state, you will get one email for each state. Take advantage of the early registration discount by signing up by February 28, 2015!

 

Delta Discount Deal, 2015 Local Metro Transit Pass Now Available   

Once you become registered for The Games, you will need to plan to get there and then get around. More information has been added to our website to help you in both ways:

Saint Paul Welcomes 2015 Senior Athletes

In the next three newsletters we will share welcome messages from each host city to help you learn more about what you will find outside of the playing field next July. We kick it off with Saint Paul, Minnesota’s capital city:

Not familiar with Saint Paul?  Let us take a moment to fill you in. Saint Paul is the home of 3M (you know, Post-It Notes), a gangster history that includes police shootouts with John Dillinger, and more recently the world’s largest Lite Brite display as confirmed by Guinness Book of World Records. We bet you’ve never seen Post-it Notes and Lite Brite in the same sentence, but that’s just the beginning of what Saint Paul has to offer.

You want architecture? How about the longest stretch of preserved Victorian architecture in the United States on Summit Avenue? The Cass Gilbert designed State Capitol is modeled after Saint Peter’s Basilica in Rome and home of the second largest unsupported marble dome in the world. And, in addition to 104 historic buildings on the National Register of Historic Places, we also have the Historic Lowertown District which was added to the Register in 1983 and has recently become a bustling hub of restaurants, pubs, outdoor concerts, Light Rail Transit and a soon to be open CHS Field.

HUMANA Heroes: Athlete of the Month

Setting His Own Pace  

Recently, the syndicated Daytime TV morning show, which is based with WFLA in Tampa, Florida and airs in 102 cities, featured a basketball shooting display by 71 year old Harry Carothers from nearby Pinellas Park. The spry marksman did not fail to impress the show hosts and audience, and the interview and demonstration extended an invitation nationwide for others to join the Senior Games Movement.

Harry, a veteran in 3 on 3 basketball at National Senior Games since 1999, has dominated free throw, timed shooting and spot shooting contests in senior competition in several Florida counties and at the Florida International Senior Games since he first toed the line at 55.  He’s netted 46 gold medals at the Florida games over the past 15 years. He has never been beaten at the county or state level in timed shooting events. Swish.

“My dad played semi pro ball and there was a basket up on our garage from my earliest memory,” Harry recalls. “As I grew he built a goal in the yard and it became this big dirt court that was the place kids came to play from a mile away. When I started high school Dad put a light on the goal and I would shoot baskets into the dark until my neighbor would yell ‘When are you going to stop so we can get some sleep?'”

Harry’s teams have earned two silver and three bronze medals at National Senior Games. All of his  Clearwater Aces teammates have collegiate basketball backgrounds, but Harry did not participate in his college years. He says he really came into his own during a 28 year Air Force career, honing basketball and other sport skills playing on base teams. “Even when I attained Colonel I was still a regular at lunchtime basketball in the gym with guys 20 years younger than I was. Basketball really is a sport you can grow old with.”

After retiring, Harry kept busy with volunteer work and being a gym rat until he met Walter Deal, founder of the Clearwater Aces.  His path as a senior athlete opened. He eventually took on managing the team and now travels and participates on average in almost one senior tournament per month with the Aces (and occasionally with other teams).  As you might expect, the sharpshooter also enters every senior shooting contest he can get to. This, despite needing to protect an implanted pacemaker for the past 17 years and overcoming bouts with prostate cancer and a hernia surgery along the way. “I kid with the other guys that when I get a little tired in a game I have the capability to turn up my heart rate.”

While acknowledging his accomplishments, Harry also quickly says his teammates are outstanding players and he has great respect for the other athletes he faces. “Everyone doing senior basketball has an interesting story to tell. When you find a guy who’s over 70 years old and taking it this seriously-working out, staying in shape and going around playing in tournaments-you know there’s something going on there.”

Athlete Survey Seeks YOUR Opinion on Exercise and Competition

If you are a senior athlete, a new survey requests that you take a few minutes to share what exercise and participation in The Games means to you. This quality of life survey through the University of South Dakota is being coordinated with NSGA by Becca Jordre, a geriatric physical therapist and USD associate professor. Jordre spearheaded another study that screened Senior Games athletes from 2011 to 2013 that produced information helpful to understand how aging athletes can better prevent injuries, disease or adverse events.

The survey (see link below) will help researchers learn more regarding your feelings about exercise, your quality of life and your mood. You’ll also have the opportunity to tell them what being a Senior Games athlete means to you. Your responses will be recorded anonymously. Please only take the survey if you participate in Senior Games.

Humana Tips -Stretch Your Way to a Healthier Body 
Yoga, a popular form of exercise developed in India more than 5,000 years ago, provides strength through a mind/body connection, increasing relaxation through meditation. There are 5 types of yoga, which include Ashtanga, Bikranm, Hatha, Iyengar, and Vinyasa. Yoga can be performed by any person, regardless of age, gender, or level of physical fitness, and can be performed any place.

It is suggested that yoga can help reduce symptoms of chronic pain, treating multiple types of arthritis by strengthening muscles and improve range of motion. It can also lower blood pressure, reduce insomnia, promote fat reduction, protect against injury, and maintain balanced metabolism. The National Health Interview named yoga within the top 10 complementary medical practices in the US, and according to the National Institute of Health, individuals who practiced yoga had less disability, pain, and depression than those with other conventional treatments.

National Senior Games “Space Race”?

If you follow our National Senior Games Facebook page, you’ll recognize this photo we shared from track athlete Ray Gildea of Madison, MS. Yes, that’s a race number bib from the 2011 National Senior Games presented by Humana on board the International Space Station. It’s from his bronze medal winning 4×100 relay race at the Houston Games. Gidea, who is active with the Astronaut Scholarship Foundation has many friends in the space program, managed to arrange for Cosmonaut Col. Gennady Pedalka to take the race bib in his personal kit on a mission in 2012. Ray is told that it may be the only time a race bib has ever been into space.
