The Sustained Athlete Fitness Exam (SAFE) is leading the way in helping athletes ages 50 and over improve their fitness and achieve peak performance.
The SAFE is the only tool designed specifically to measure the physical fitness of senior athletes. Since 2011, more than 4,600 National Senior Games athletes have completed the SAFE and received personalized feedback to improve their health and athletic performance.
“This is one of the most valuable parts of The Games.” - SAFE participant
The exam was created by Dr. Becca Jordre, PT, DPT, PhD, who saw a need for a better way to assess the fitness of highly active older adults. The 20-minute exam measures four fitness pillars: cardiovascular, muscular, flexibility and balance.
The SAFE helps senior athletes:
- Identify strengths and weaknesses
- Reduce injury risk
- Improve performance in competition
- Track progress over time
- Get personalized guidance from experts
Why Was the SAFE Created?
Most senior athletes ace standard fitness tests. These tests compare athletes to the average older adult - someone who is generally less active. That means the results don’t offer athletes much insight into where they can grow or get stronger.
Dr. Jordre saw this gap and created the SAFE. The tool provides research-based benchmarks that compare senior athletes with their highly active peers.
How Can I Take the SAFE?
The SAFE is available for registered athletes at the National Senior Games. Many State Senior Games also offer the screening.
