Member of Branford, Ct. and then Madison, Ct Jaycees as Treasurer. Received awards for service including 10 year outstanding Connecticut Jaycee and received a lifetime membership to the International Jaycees.
At Lehigh played some soccer and ran some track but mostly played intrafraternity touch football and basketball for Sigma Phi. Elected into the Brown and White Society (athletic organization).
After college played town league touch football, basketball and softball. Started running for fitness at age 30 giving up football and basketball. Participated in softball all star games. At age 35 started raising and racing sled dogs winning 11 club championships in the New England Sled Dog Club and the Down East Sled Dog Club. Received top kennel award and made lifetime member of the NESDC. Won titles in obedience competition including top dog at a Bermuda match. Raced dogs for 29 years with 3 daughters and grandson who won 3 NESDC championships as well as the 1 dog Laconia World Championship at age 4. Was President and Treasurer of the International Siberian Husky Club and President of an Ct. All Breed Club. Served on the race committee for the Siberian Club of America.
Started doing road races at age 42 and running track and cross country in national and international completion at age 56. Presently hold a world record in the 70+ indoor 4X800 and world marks in the 60 and 70 indoor 4X1600. Have won national championships in the steeplechase, indoor triple jump and 8K cross country competition. Have won numerous national and local championships putting teams together in team and relay track, road race and cross country competition. Since age 45 have placed 1st in age group competition over 1,000 times. Received the Maine Corporate Track award for outstanding distance runner and voted into the New England 65 Plus Runners Hall of fame. Received an outstanding achievement award from the Maine Track C and several age group awards. At age 60 was named the top Ct. runner by New England Runner.
After retiring in 2004 we moved to Brunswick where I did volunteer work for the local animal shelter. I approached the Track coach at Bowdoin about doing volunteer work and have been a volunteer coach for the cross country and track teams since 2004. Received the Bowdoin College Polar Bear Award for Outstanding support of Bowdoin Athletics. Continue to do part time work as financial contractor to Maine natural gas.
Was a member of the Ct USA Track & Field Long Distance Race Committee and was the chair for the Maine USATF Long Distance Race committee setting up a Grand Prix competition. Was a member of the Ct. Senior Games Board and am a member of the Maine Senior Games Advisory Board as well as the National Senior Games Board.
The past 2 years have been a challenge with my prostate and kidney removed due to cancer followed by radiation therapy but I was able to complete the snowshoe and trail race 3 races at Bradbury Mtn to earn the” Bad Ass” shirt and sweatshirt. I received a special award for the effort.
