Michael Hess

Professor of Sports Marketing and Management

Michael grew up in Southern California where he helped his high school win championships in both baseball and basketball and earned a Division I basketball scholarship to play at the University of California, Irvine (UCI). Upon receiving his undergraduate degree Michael joined the UCI men’s basketball staff as an assistant coach while simultaneously earning an MBA degree. After two seasons of coaching at the NCAA Division I level, Michael decided to extend his playing career and signed with a professional basketball team in Germany.

When Michael’s playing days finally ended he started his business career with Procter & Gamble in California. He later transferred back to Germany in a role as International Marketing Manager with Hama, a German consumer-electronics company. Michael soon returned to sport by joining Adidas as the European Marketing Manager of the Basketball Division at the company’s headquarters, where he was later promoted to Global Promotions Manager. He eventually returned to school to earn a Ph.D. in Management at IESE Business School in Barcelona, Spain, and he currently teaches marketing and management courses at CUNEF University in Madrid. Michael also teaches sport marketing strategy at both IE Business School in Madrid, Spain and University College Dublin in Ireland.

Michael joined the NSGA’s Basketball Competition at the 2009 Games in Palo Alto, California and in 2010 was hired as the National Basketball Chair for the NSGA. Since 2011 Michael has been leading a research project with the NSGA National Center for Senior Health and Fitness (NCSHF) to advance understanding of sport participation motivation among NSGA athletes. In January 2012, Michael was elected onto the NSGA Board of Directors.
